If you’ve ever been to a big car show, you might know what a concept car is. Car designers create concept cars to exhibit new styles, cutting edge technologies and the latest building techniques. Concept-car designs often influence how the next generation of production cars will look.

A car that starts out as a concept car can later go into production. Take, for example, the Dodge Challenger Concept. Designers modeled it after the famous 1970 Dodge Challenger, a favorite of enthusiasts and collectors alike. The Challenger Concept was unveiled at the Detroit auto show in 2006. A short time later, the company announced it would introduce the Challenger as a new product.

Car designs are always changing, from streamlining in the 1930s, to tailfins in the 1950s, to the retro craze of the 2000s. In the 1920s, cars looked very much the same. Then, General Motors boss Alfred P. Sloan Jr. made a bold move and decided cars had to look different each year to get people to constantly want to buy new ones. His plan worked, and GM went on to become the largest car company in the world.

Cars are now designed by a large design team. Designers learn the basics in art school and study toward a degree in transportation design. The design team is divided into three groups, each one tackling a separate part of the car: exterior, interior, and trim.

Designers use computers and 3D graphics programs to build the car digitally before it’s built in real life. Scale models are built before each car reaches the showroom.
